A UK offer should be tested against purchasing power and local position

Direct currency conversion shows a nominal equivalent, but it does not describe what the salary buys in the United Kingdom. Wahoya therefore shows a separate purchasing-power benchmark.

The income-position comparison asks whether the offer places you higher or lower in the UK distribution than your current income does in India. These two signals can point in different directions.

Use the result to compare

  • INR current income versus the actual GBP offer
  • UK salary estimated to preserve national buying power
  • Percentile and median-income movement between countries

Worked example from the calculator data

This indexed example uses the same WID bundle and shared calculation engine as the interactive calculator.

India income converted into United Kingdom benchmarks
India annual income Market-rate equivalent National purchasing-power threshold Destination median-income context
₹20,00,000 £18,703 £66,319 £34,969The purchasing-power threshold is 1.90× the United Kingdom median.

Market conversion only translates INR into GBP. The purchasing-power threshold adjusts for national price levels, while the destination median describes where that threshold sits in the UK income distribution; the signals answer different questions.

Common questions

How much UK salary matches my Indian salary's purchasing power?

Enter your annual Indian income in INR. Wahoya uses WID purchasing-power conversion factors for the selected common year to estimate the GBP salary that preserves the same national-level buying power.

Why can a nominal raise still be a downgrade?

A larger GBP offer may still fall below the purchasing-power threshold or place you lower in the UK income distribution. Wahoya shows both signals instead of treating currency conversion as the whole answer.

Is this the average salary for software engineers or another occupation?

No. Wahoya uses national income distributions, not occupation-, employer- or experience-specific salary surveys. It cannot tell you the market rate for a software engineer or any other role.

Does the comparison include UK tax and city rent?

No. It excludes personal tax, National Insurance, city rent, healthcare, pensions, benefits, equity, visa costs and household structure. Add those to a separate relocation budget.

Are my salary inputs uploaded?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. Salary amounts and exact percentile results are not sent to Wahoya analytics.
